Protected 18650 batteries for XHDATA D-368
I bought a couple of XHDATA D-368 handheld radios for extended family, in case we need to go to hide in a shelter again. Turns out, old-style radios are fun to play not in an emergency, especially for kids!
Out of the box it comes with a 3.8V 2Ah unprotected li-on cell:

It’s dimensions are 18 x 65 mm (thus 18650).
XHDATA D-368 is the first and only device I own that does not fit the protected 18650 cell1. Here is my default protected 18650, next to the one that comes with the radio:

With a few tools:
Tools I used to extend the battery compartment
And ~15 minutes of work I was able to squeeze it in:
Protected 18650 cell (70.5mm long) fits into XHDATA D-368
I expanded both sides of the compartment, however, it turned out it would have been sufficient to only drill where the plate is (the positive terminal).
If someone from XHDATA is reading about this: there is clearly space. Please expand the compartment by ~5.5mm in the next release, so this surgery is unnecessary. :)

Protected cell means includes a BMS (Battery Management System), which protects against overcurrent, overcharge and over-discharge (which I highly value for the power Li-On 18650’s have). Some feature a usb-c socket for charging, which makes them very universal: powerful, quite safe and convenient. ↩︎
